How to Eliminate Refrigerator Odors

Refrigerators are amazing appliances and have helped to improve the quality life across the country. Because of the invention of the refrigerator, people's diets have improved and diversified, and the risk of foodborne illnesses has greatly reduced. Refrigerators aren't perfect though, as they are susceptible to breakdowns and developing terrible odors from your foods. If your refrigerator currently reeks to high heavens, use the tips below to rid the stench.

Conduct a Clean Out
One of the biggest causes of unpleasant odors in your refrigerator is spoiled food. To fix this problem, it is a good idea to fully clean out your refrigerator to eliminate the source of the problem. Remove all food items from your refrigerator, throwing away anything which has expired during the process. Store what's left in a cooler while you wipe down the shelves, drawers, and interior walls of the refrigerator until everything is spotless. Replace your items back in the refrigerator and make sure to keep up with throwing expired foods out in the future.

Use Deodorizers
If you have removed the source of the stench but the smell is still lingering, use a deodorizer to either absorb or overpower the scent. Baking soda is a traditional deodorizer and has been used around the kitchen for decades. Keeping an open box of baking soda on the top shelf of your refrigerator will absorb any unpleasant odors in just a day or two. Other household items you can try are coffee grounds and cotton balls dipped in vanilla extract.

Airtight Containers
Some foods can cause your refrigerator to stink even if they are still fresh. If this is the case, the main offenders are usually leftovers. To combat this, store all of your leftovers in airtight containers; no more putting your pizza on a plate or leaving a bowl of chili uncovered on your refrigerator shelf. Storing your foods in airtight containers will not only contain their smell, it will help them stay fresh for longer too.
